At Studio Lumen, light is more than illumination; it is a strategic design tool used to shape experience, enhance wellbeing, and optimise performance. This philosophy guided the lighting design for the Wellness Floors at SIRO One Za’abeel, Dubai’s first fully integrated business and active lifestyle hotel. The project required a carefully considered lighting strategy that could balance energy and calm while maintaining a refined, visually sophisticated environment.
From the outset, the design team approached the project with a strong focus on human physiology. The Wellness Floors, including the Lobby, Gym, Spinning Room, Yoga Studio, Treatment Rooms and Lounges, each required a nuanced lighting approach. Light needed to adapt to activity, guide movement through the space, and support both performance and recovery. The overall strategy was grounded in circadian lighting principles, ensuring that light supports natural rhythms throughout the day, from energising, high-performance zones to restorative spaces designed for relaxation and recovery.
A key strength of the scheme lies in its architectural integration. Rather than adding decorative fixtures, light was carefully integrated into the architecture itself – concealed within coves, joinery, stairs and artwork – to create a seamless and visually calm environment. Accent lighting was used with restraint, highlighting textures and focal points only where necessary. This disciplined approach ensures the space feels refined and uncluttered, while still delivering visual interest and hierarchy.
The project also demonstrates Studio Lumen’s problem-solving approach to multi-use environments. Large, open-plan areas are zoned using light alone, with carefully calibrated intensity levels, contrast and colour temperature defining different functions without the need for physical partitions. Advanced lighting control systems allow the atmosphere to change instantly, responding to occupancy, time of day and guest needs, ensuring the spaces remain flexible and responsive.
Sustainability was central to the design strategy. High-efficiency LED lighting was specified throughout, paired with intelligent lighting controls including occupancy and daylight-responsive systems to minimise energy consumption and extend product lifespan. By integrating technology discreetly within the architecture, the design achieves a balance between luxury, operational efficiency and environmental responsibility.
SIRO One Za’abeel demonstrates Studio Lumen’s expertise in creating lighting that is experiential, technical and human-focused. The project shows how thoughtful lighting design can transform spaces – supporting physical performance, promoting mental clarity and enhancing emotional wellbeing – while setting a new benchmark for wellness-focused hospitality lighting.
